• Markie and Jessica

Episode 1 Show Notes

Since this is the first episode, we wanted to introduce ourselves:

  • Markie: A long time m/m romance junkie, when she’s not reading novels and yaoi, writing and “shipping” hot cops who work across the street from her office building. She’s not just in love with all things m/m, but also a video game nerd, a dinosaur and paleontology enthusiast, and science education supporter and activist.

  • Vampire Lestat (Vampire Chronicles) Anne Rice

  • Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner series) Lynn Flewelling

  • Cut & Run (Cut & Run series) Abigail Roux

  • Jessica: an all around book nerd who is newish to the m/m genre and loving it. Other interests include gaming (video, tabletop, board, card, etc,) Halloween, space science and science education/advocacy, cooking, and hanging out with my adorable significant other and cat (2 separate entities, though the cat is cute af.)

  • Favorite authors relevant to the genre: Anne Rice, Gail Carriger, Jex Lane, and TJ Klune

  • First foray into the genre (aside from Anne Rice) was Captive Prince by C S Pacat

* GRL (Gay Romance Literature) retreat is at the end of October in Denver Colorado, and Markie is going to be attending this year for the first time ever!

From the site:

“GayRomLit is an annual retreat that brings together the people who create and celebrate LGBT romance for a one-of-a-kind, must-attend gathering of dynamic, informal, and diverse fun. From raucous parties to mellow tête á têtes, GRL is the place to connect with old friends and find family you didn’t know you had.”

Not only is the retreat apparently a blast, but it’s also a gathering of fans and authors alike, with book signing events, costume parties, arts and crafts, and over all shenanigans.

Tickets are still on sale for regular admission.

The Cocky Boys are going to be at GRL this year as the entertainment and will be screening a new movie. (What out, that link takes you to a very spicy site. Definitely NSFW)

  • New Releases in September:

  • Finding Mr. Wrong Charlie Crochet Sept 1st

  • Both of us are long time fans of Crochet from her THIRDs series. If it’s anywhere as charming and witty, I’m sure we’ll love it.

  • Someone to Call My Own Aimee Nicole Walker Sept 5th

  • A love between a psychic and a former black ops specialist. Sold. Apparently has lots of steam and raw emotion from tragedies.

  • Tate (Temptation #5) Ella Frank Sept. 7th

  • Markie read Try and it's fucking amazing.

  • A series that needs to start from the beginning. This one has a heavy following and a serious fan base. Seems to be emotional and very sexy and the characters seem to have an “opposites attract” situation.

  • Autoboyography Christina Lauren Sept 12th

  • About a novelist who falls for for a Mormon prodigy who’s also selling books. Well, now I gotta see what happens. Lots of reviews.

  • Tramps and Thieves (Murder and Mayhem #2) Rhys Ford Sept 18th

  • Like the name implies, this story is about a thief trying to get on the right side of the law and the man who loves him.

  • Upcoming Releases:

  • Safe and Sound (Twist of Fate #2) Lucy Lennox & Sloan Kennedy Oct. 3rd

  • Sightlines (The Community #3) Santio Hassel Oct. 9th

  • Series about powerful psychics.

  • On Your Knees, Prospect (Kings of Hell MC #3) K.A. Merikan sometime in Oct.

  • One of my favorite series from Merikan so far. This one is going to be about their youngest biker gang member, Jake, who has so far been extremely submissive.

  • Just released a short story with Tooth and Lucky

  • Gummy Bears & Grenades (THIRDs #9.5) Charlie Croche

  • Within These Depths (Demons and Wolves #2) Katze Snow early October

  • Second installment of a dark paranormal romance

M/M Musings:

What do you think of covers for romance books? Are you more quick to pick up a book if they are swimming in abs and hotness, or are you more attracted to covers absent of flesh? What are some of your favorite covers?

October’s BOTM is Merrick by Claire Cray

"New York, 1799: the future looks bright for the charming young book dealer William Lacy, until a raucous night of drinking lands him in shackles. He narrowly avoids the brutal prison system thanks to his mother, who negotiates with the judge to secure him a five year apprenticeship in lieu of a prison sentence. And so William finds himself in a carriage bound for the remote woods upstate, where he'll spend the next years of his life learning a new trade under some old master. When he first sees Merrick, William thinks he's been dropped into a medieval horror story."
